With spatial data being distributed across files and hardware, it becomes difficult to identify authoritative data sources. Collaboration is also limited when valuable data is siloed and not accessible to people working on projects that could make use of it. This leads to a lot of time spent either searching for data, or re-creating existing data. |
| Objective: |
The Survey needs a central enterprise data store that users across all divisions of the organization can access and update. Project data will be collected centrally and can be used (and updated) in future projects. This continually improving data set will not only make work easier within the Survey, but can be used as a product for external use as well. |
| Approach: |
This will require efforts to install, configure and maintain software and hardware to both host and consume spatial data services in a way that grants secure, controlled access to Survey users in order to visualize, analyze and update the data. |
| Products: |
We will use the currently available hardware and Microsoft/Esri software to implement a system based around Windows Servers, SQL Server for the data back-end, and ArcGIS Enterprise (ArcGIS Server, Data Store, and Portal) for the spatial back-end. The 'branch versioning' feature of ArcGIS Portal will control the data update workflow. Various front end applications will be used for field data collection including ArcGIS Survey 123 and ArcGIS Field Maps. Custom data visualization applications will be written using the ArcGIS JavaScript API. |
| Benefits: |
The streamlined and documented workflow implemented Survey-wide will reduce confusion and save time getting data read for new projects. It will also be easier to on-board people new to the mapping process. The data compiled in the project will be a valuable asset to the work of the Survey and can be provided as a service to external stakeholders. |
