Ongoing research on the coalbed methane potential in Indiana and the Illinois Basin is conducted in cooperation with the local mining industry. The research involves field core description, coal sample collection, canister desorption, coal characterization, gas-in-place calculations, and composition and isotopic characteristics of gases. The main emphasis is microbial gas generation, the type that prevails in the eastern part of the basin. Both field and laboratory studies are conducted.
