Biography

Matt has worked as a professional cartographer for nearly 20 years, including seven years with National Geographic Maps.

His career at the IGWS started in 2012 as the Cartographic Coordinator which over the years transitioned to the Cartographic Specialist and Digital Collections Manager. He oversaw the production of both printed and interactive web maps, figure creation for publications, and provided support to the IGWS scientist and researchers with data visualization and techniques. He also managed project archiving.

Matt’s role transitioned in 2021 to the Assistant Director for Information Services. In this role he leads a team of highly skilled professional staff involved with GIS, physical and digital Collections, education outreach, publication editing/production, and IT.

Matt holds a Bachelor of Science in Geography with a concentration in GIS from Appalachian State University which he earned in 2003.
