The U.S. Geological Survey's Web site notes that more than 243 Indiana citizens reported feeling the quake.
This event demonstrates how earthquakes occurring near the Midwest often are felt over large geographic areas, compared to earthquakes in the western United States. Because of the much older age and cooler temperatures of Midwestern rocks, waves generated by an earthquake are able to travel much greater distances without losing intensity, compared with younger, warmer rocks in California.
