Indiana Geological Survey data contributions to the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS)
These data represent a subset of GIS information in Indiana (earth temperature data, bedrock characteristics, groundwater geochemistry, datasets related to currently installed systems) that have potential applications relating to geothermal ground–source heat pump (GSHP) system design. It was gathered by the Indiana Geological Survey as part of an effort to populate the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) with data in a digital form.
This material is based upon work supported by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and the Arizona Geological Survey under Prime Award Number DE–EE0002850 and Sub–Award Number IN–EE002850.

Aquifer Transmissivity Values for Selected Basins in Indiana |
Transmissivity estimates have utility for GSHP installers designing open loop systems. Performance of injection wells is dependent upon the transmissivity of the aquifer in which the well is screened |
Design and efficiency of GSHP systems depends on the textural characteristics of unconsolidated deposits. |
Design and efficiency of GSHP systems depends on the water content of unconsolidated deposits. This data set includes other important design variables such length of the heating and cooling season (as indicated by frost free days) as well as the bulk density of near–surface sediments. |
Bedrock contours for the Maumee Basin – northeastern Indiana (Fort Wayne area) |
Drilling costs and thermal properties vary between overlying unconsolidated sediments and underlying bedrock units. |
Unconsolidated thickness contours for the Maumee Basin – northeastern Indiana (Fort Wayne area) |
Selection of GSHP systems depends on the thickness of unconsolidated materials and depth to bedrock. |
Temperature gradient contours of Devonian rocks in Indiana |
Temperature data provides a first–order guide to locations of thermal anomalies that might indicate new geothermal resources. |

Temperature gradient contours of Mississippian rocks in Indiana |

Temperature gradient contours of Pennsylvanian rocks in Indiana |

Wells with Bottom–Hole Temperatures from the Petroleum Database Management System |
Wells with Temperature Logs from the Petroleum Database Management System |
Petroleum logs provide information that is potentially relevant to use of co–produced fluids, as well as information on lithologies and other data relevant to selection and design of ground–source heat–pump systems. |
Provides locations of water wells used in GSHP systems in Indiana. (Total depth, drilling methods, well construction details, driller contact info.) |
Flooded underground mines represent a potential source of free–flowing water for ground–source heat–pump systems. |
Elevation of the top of the Knox Dolomite (Cambro–Ordovician) |
Provides guidance for deep drilling projects. |

Elevation of the base of the New Albany Shale (Devonian and Mississippian) |

Elevation of the first occurrence of the 3,000 ppm total dissolved solids boundary |
Unfavorable groundwater chemistry impacts certain types of GSHP systems and high total dissolved solids concentrations indicate these conditions. |
