These data were downloaded from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (IDNR), Division of Water Web site. The associated data files are part of a CD-ROM publication: IDNR Division of Water, Aquifer Transmissivity Values, Publication 109, CD-ROM. The data were derived and modified from five preexisting maps/databases: Saul, M. and Gosine, R., 1990. Kankakee River Basin Aquifer Transmissivity Values, Indiana; Gosine, R., 1994. Lake Michigan Region Aquifer Transmissivity Values, Indiana.; Nance, D., 1996. Maumee River Basin Aquifer Transmissivity Values, Indiana; Schrader, G., 1996. Description:
Abstract:
This file is a digital geospatial point coverage of transmissivity values calculated for the Kankakee River Basin, the Lake Michigan Region, the Maumee River Basin, the West Fork of the White River Basin, and the Whitewater River Basin in Indiana. The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata: "The method of calculation varies between the Theis method for detailed analysis of pump tests, and transmissivity determined from specific capacity data for domestic wells. The specific capacity data were derived from water well logs."
Purpose:
AQUIFER_TRANSMISSIVITY_IDNR_IN.shp is intended for display and/or analyses requiring spatially distributed point values of aquifer transmissivity for the Kankakee River Basin, the Lake Michigan Region, the Maumee River Basin, the West Fork of the White River Basin, and the Whitewater River Basin. These transmissivity estimates have utility for geothermal heat pump installers designing open loop ground-coupled systems since the performance of injection wells is dependent upon the transmissivity of the aquifer in which the well is screened. This shapefile was produced by the Indiana Geological Survey as part of an effort to populate the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) with data in a digital form. This material is based upon work supported by the Department of Energy and the Arizona Geological Survey under Prime Award Number DE-EE0002850 and Sub-Award Number IN-EE002850.

Attribute_Accuracy:
Attribute_Accuracy_Report:
The following exerpt is from metadata for the the West Fork White River transmissivity shapefile downloaded from the IDNR Web site: "The calculations for each point were conducted after a thorough documentation of well characteristics and recording of pump test details. The calculations using the program TGUESS from specific capacity data contain inherent assumptions, and the values for all domestic wells should be considered estimates and the data should be used with caution."

Logical_Consistency_Report: No tests were made.

Completeness_Report:
The following exerpt is from metadata for the the West Fork White River transmissivity shapefile downloaded from the IDNR Web site: "Every attempt was made to include calculations for all water wells that had complete information on well logs, including complete location, construction, pump test, and lithological information. There were many areas in the basin that had insufficient information due to the particular drillers in the area who chronically under-report information on well logs or because of the pervasive insufficient supply of water. Most well logs for poorly producing wells are missing information. A separate coverage for dry holes (or pumped/bailed dry) is included in conjunction with the transmissivity data set."
Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy:
Horizontal_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The following exerpt is from metadata for the the West Fork White River transmissivity shapefile downloaded from the IDNR Web site: "The locations of the wells were field located, but the locations of actual wells were usually estimated from 7.5 minute topographic maps, and visual siting of wells was not always possible. Many locations were based on location of the street address on the well log."

Vertical_Positional_Accuracy:
Vertical_Positional_Accuracy_Report:
The vertical positional accuracy was not a factor in the creation of these data. No quantitative tests were performed.

Data sets (downloaded from <http://www.in.gov/dnr/water/5247.htm>) with transmissivity estimates for aquifers in five Indiana drainage basins. Also included are associated water-well information for each transmissivity calculation. Most calculations were conducted for domestic wells using specific capacity information included on water-well logs. ArcGIS shapefiles of the point values are included, as well as metadata for each data set. ESRI Shapefiles - kk_trans.shp (Kankakee River Basin), lm_trans.shp (Lake Michigan Region), mrb_trans.shp (Maumee River Basin), wfwr_trans.shp (West Fork White River), and ww_trans.shp (Whitewater River Basin)

Fields with no X,Y coordinates were deleted from the attribute table using the Editor toolbar in ArcMap. Several records (74) were deleted from the attribute table because spatial data (X,Y coordinates) were not included in the IDNR database. Most of these records (72) were from the Lake Michigan Basin data set with two from the Maumee River Basin data set also removed.

The pumping rate in gallons per minute. The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata: "usually rounded up, especially on domestic water well logs in areas of low production. Also, if the method of testing is Air, then the pump rate is highly inflated. Wells were eliminated if the reported pumping rate was deemed impossibly high given the well diameter."

Attribute_Definition:
The thickness of the producing aquifer. The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata: "Determination by geologist using the lithologic log on the back of IDNR water well logs as well as information such as casing length and screen placement. There is a fair amount of educated guesswork in determination of aquifer thickness from a water well log. If multiple lithologies were stacked that should produce water, then the entire thickness was used. In many cases, the well was ended in a water-bearing formation, so the thickness of the aquifer is of an assumed thickness. For bedrock and unconsolidated aquifers, if the total aquifer thickness is known, the Penetration flag will not have an A (for assumed) in it. Otherwise, the aquifer thickness is the amount of the water-bearing formation penetrated by the well (usually from the top of the formation to the bottom of the well screen)."

Attribute_Label: OPEN_INTER
Attribute_Definition:
The open interval as measured in feet. The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata, "This is a measure of the amount of the aquifer that is exposed to the well. For unconsolidated wells, this value is the screen length. For bedrock wells, this value is the bedrock between the bottom of the casing and the bottom of the well (i.e., well depth well casing length). The determination is done by a geologist, but the values are from the IDNR water well logs." Details were not given with the original IDNR metadata, but it is presumed that a value of "0" indicates that the open interval was not determined for that particular record.

Storage coefficient - a measure of the storage capacity of an aquifer. The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata: "Historically, the storage coefficient has been an assumed value that is dependent only on whether the aquifer is confined (0.0002) or unconfined (0.2)." Details were not given with the original IDNR metadata, but it is presumed that a value of "0" indicates that the storage coefficient was not determined for that particular record.

Attribute_Label: WELL_LOSS_
Attribute_Definition:
Well loss coefficient - a measure of the efficiency of a well. The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata: "This value is usually larger for high-capacity wells. Historically, this value = 1 for all wells using specific capacity data for transmissivity calculations. This is because small diameter, low-production wells do not generate turbulence around the well screen during a pump test." Details were not given with the original IDNR metadata, but it is presumed that a value of "0" indicates that the well loss coefficient was not determined for that particular record.

The following was exerpted from IDNR metadata: "Determined by a geologist; for unconsolidated wells, used screen length, lithology, and aquifer thickness. For bedrock wells, used the open interval, lithology, and aquifer thickness. The best estimates of transmissivity are records with F, with the next best value P because the aquifer thickness is known. Other calculations have major assumptions associated with them."
