Abstract:
WELLS_PDMS_2010_IGS_IN is an ESRI ArcMap point shapefile that shows the locations of all wells in the Petroleum Database Management System of the Indiana Geological Survey. Attributes of the shapefile include locational coordinates (in Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 16, NAD83), a unique identification number for each well (IGS_ID), the method used to determine each well's location, whether or not the well is active, the symbol (code) used by the Indiana Geological Survey to designate the category of the well, the posted total depth (TD) of each well, the stratigraphic formation at the posted TD, and the completion date of the first recorded well event.
Purpose:
WELLS_PDMS_2010_IGS_IN was created to provide an index to wells with logs in the archives of the Indiana Geological Survey. After obtaining the unique identification number of a well of interest, the user can then easily obtain more detailed information about the well by visiting the online Petroleum Database Management System of the Indiana Geological Survey. This shapefile was produced by the Indiana Geological Survey as part of an effort to populate the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) with data in a digital form. Microsoft SQL Server Management was used to write a query to select wells from the database named "PDMS." The result of the query was imported into a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet. The spreadsheet was loaded into ESRI ArcMap and locations were plotted using the "Display XY Data" function. The function named "Data>Export Data" was used to produce a shapefile named "GeoThermalEvents.shp."

The well's location was spotted with coordinates determined by Global Positioning Satellite. Beginning in 2005, some location spots were verified using a GPS unit with a best accuracy of +/- 15 feet. Unless otherwise indicated in the "Field Check Subtable" of the PDMS, the GPS unit reported an accuracy of 20 feet or less. GPS was never used to determine elevations because the margin of error is too large.

The well's location was spotted by digitizing from a 1:24,000-scale topographic map or by batch processing software. All well spots in the PDMS have been visually examined and compared with earlier manually spotted well location maps at the scale 1 inch = 1 mile. Obvious discrepancies have been corrected by measuring the well locations onscreen (using a computer monitor). However, lesser accuracy is likely for the well location spots in many densely drilled areas. These spots will eventually be measured as time allows.
