Issue:
Objective:
Approach: The IGWS will apply geologic nomenclature from the System for Earth Sample Registration (SESAR) and recommended practices found in The New Museum Registration Methods published by the American Association of Museums for cataloging and rehousing geologic specimens. Recommended practices from the Library of Congress and Society of American Archivists will be adhered to while organizing, describing, cataloging, and digitizing paper records.
Products: Compiled metadata and content description records added to the National Digital Catalog, and obtaining IGSNs through the SESAR registry, making materials publicly searchable through two web interfaces.
Benefits: Adding to our publicly available and accessible data will allow us to enhance our service to our stakeholders while continuing to fulfill our responsibility as the state’s sole repository for geologic materials. By regularly reassessing, organizing, cataloging, rehousing, and compiling metadata, IGWS will provide FAIR data, and exert control over the efficient use of collection spaces.
