Issue: |
Characterizing the mineralogical compositions of rocks is an important research effort at the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) aligned with several state- and federally funded projects. Currently, there is no XRD instrument at the IGWS that can be used for mineralogical analysis. |
Objective: |
The objective of this project is to acquire an X-ray diffraction system for mineralogical analysis at the IGWS. |
Approach: |
A Siemens D500 XRD instrument will be purchased from Purdue Fort Wayne. Parts, software, ICDD database, and service contracts will be purchased from KS Analytical Systems, a company specializing in XRD instruments and services. |
Products: |
An XRD instrument with the capability of quantitative mineralogical analysis will be functional. |
Benefits: |
The X-ray diffraction system will be used for mineralogical analysis of rocks in Indiana and serve various projects with this need. |
