A Petroleum Field is a geographically contiguous area containing one or more productive petroleum wells (including gas storage wells) which has been assigned a name for convenience and classification. The field area is designated in the Map Viewer by a Field Outline. Dry holes drilled within the field are also considered to be part of the field.
The Petroleum Field (or simply Field) to which a well belongs is indicated in the Well Header section of the Well Record Page (the Field Name is stored in the Location Table). The Field Name is also a data field in the Fields and Production Module.
When successful drilling expands a field boundary into the boundary of another field, those fields may be consolidated (combined) under a single field name, generally one of the previously assigned names. When two or more fields are consolidated, at least one of the former fields will no longer exist, and the discarded name(s) is transferred from the Field Name list to the Former Field Name list, also stored in the Location Table).
