The Land Unit Type refers to the type of surveyed Land Unit within which a well location falls. In addition to Land Units designated as "sections" within the Congressional Township and Range Survey System, Indiana contains tracts of land that were surveyed prior to the congressional surveys of 1807. These tracts were grouped into different Land Units based on the purpose of the particular survey for which they were determined. Individual parcels of land within each of these tracts are identified by their Land Unit Type plus a number (Land Number) and/or name (Land Unit Name).

Sections are the elemental land units in the Congressional Township and Range Survey System which covers most of Indiana. They are the default Land Unit (Land Unit Type) in the PDMS.
In principle, a section is a square, one mile on each side; however, exceptions to this ideal size are common.
