Land Unit Names are proper names used to identify some specific units of land. They should not be confused with Land Unit Types (Section, Commons, ...), which are the names of categories of land units. Land Unit Names are only used for certain Land Unit Types:
There are only 3 commons in Indiana, all located in Knox County:
Vincennes A Commons
Vincennes B Commons
Vincennes C Commons
While there are many numbered Locations in Indiana, there are only 3 Named Locations, all located in Pike County:
Dubois Location
J. Patton Location
C. Wyant Location
It is perhaps unfortunate that the term "location" was applied to official surveys of units of land because "location" is also used to in the petroleum industry (and in the PDMS) to indicate a spot on the ground where a planned well is to be drilled, and "well location" refers to the spot where a well has already been drilled. Nevertheless, the intended meaning of "location" should be obvious in context.
There are tens of named Reserves in Indiana. Some Reserves are numbered as well as named.
The term "survey" has several uses (not counting "Indiana Geological Survey"). In addition to the Surveys that indicate officially recognized land units, the term is also used more generally to refer to a particular act of surveying a parcel of land by a registered land surveyor.
Although there are many numbered Surveys in Indiana, there are only 5 Named Surveys, all of the Named Surveys are located in Knox County:
Cathlinette Prairie Survey
Lower Prairie Survey
F. Mallet Survey
J. B. St. Mary Racine Survey
Upper Prairie Survey
