Biography
As the managing editor of the Indiana Journal of Earth Sciences, Sara aids in the editorial review of submitted manuscripts, maps and other forms of print and digital media and guides them through publication or archive; populates the E-GeoNews newsletter; and helps tell the stories of Indiana Geological and Water Survey scientists and their projects to a wide audience.
A Hoosier by birth and later by choice, Sara has two decades of experience at newspapers in Indiana. She has earned nearly 100 state-level honors for community journalism over her career including first-place awards for news, feature, column and headline writing; newspaper design; use of graphics; community service journalism; and sections focusing on the outdoors, local business and the arts. From 2009 to 2021, she led the Brown County Democrat newspaper to three Hoosier State Press Association Nondaily Blue Ribbon wins, six finalist finishes, two Story of the Year honors and 11 General Excellence awards.
In 2021, Sara was the winner of the HSPA’s Nina Mason Pulliam Environmental Journalism Award for an analysis of stream sample results and their intersection with the Friends of Lake Monroe Watershed Management Project. The IGWS is linked to that project through a volunteer affiliate.
A proud resident of Brown County, Sara is an avid hiker and explorer of Indiana’s forest biodiversity.
