A graphic symbol is used to indicate the location and "designation" of a well on IGS maps. The IGS Petroleum Well Symbols are similar to those used in the petroleum industry and by other geological surveys, although no recognized standard exists. Each symbol is associated with a Symbol Code that can be used to search, sort, and group related wells on a map or in well data tables. The symbols are also associated ASCII True-Type Font characters that are used to spot wells on a map.
The immediately following Table of Well Symbols shows the complete IGS Petroleum Well Symbol set. Although the number of symbols may appear daunting, the symbols follow a fairly simple scheme that is easy to learn.
