Monroe County is in south-central Indiana about 35 miles south of Indianapolis, the state capital. Its shape approximates a rectangle, and its longest dimension is about 24 miles from north to south. The area of the county is about 412 square miles. Monroe County is one of the most rapidly growing counties in Indiana. The population was 101,000 in 1982 (U.S. Census Bureau, 1984), and it is projected to reach 108,600 in 2000 (Division of Research, 1983). Most of the population is concentrated in and around Bloomington and Ellettsville. The population of Bloomington and of the county is increased by 30,000 Indiana University students during the normal school year. The student population falls to about 13,000 during the summer. Monroe County has a continental temperate climate. This area is typically hot and humid during July and August. The daily average is high temperature is 85F, but temperatures occasionally approach a maximum of 105 to 110F (Visher, 1944). Winters are cold and damp. The average minimum daily temperature is 23F, but December-January-February temperatures can drop below -20F. The spring and fall are generally comfortable, but the weather is subject to extreme fluctuations throughout the year…
