ABSTRACT: This study estimates the coal resources of Pike County, Indiana. The volume in tons of original coal in place and remaining coal after mining were calculated for six Pennsylvanian coal beds within the study area. In descending stratigraphic order, the six coal beds are: Seelyville Coal Member of the Staunton Formation; the Survant Coal Member of the Linton Formation; Houchin Creek and Springfield Coal Members of the Petersburg Formation, and the Bucktown and Hymera Coal Members of the Dugger Formation. The Seelyville Coal Member belongs to the Raccoon Creek Group while the remaining five coal beds belong to the Carbondale Group. Other coals are present in Pike County but are not examined in this study because there is insufficient information to accurately calculate resources for these coals. Resources were calculated by assigning each coal data point to one of two thickness categories, "14-18 inches" or "greater than 28 inches" and to one of two overburden categories, "0-100 feet" or "greater than 100 feet". In addition to these categories, resources calculated for each coal were characterized by four levels of geologic assurance or confidence. The confidence categories express the degree of confidence of finding coal at a particular location basedon distance from a data point. The four categories are: measured (0-0.25 miles), indicated (0.25-0.75 miles), inferred (0.75-3.0 miles) and hypothetical (3.0-10.0 miles). The total original resources of the six coal beds in Pike County are 2.8 billion short tons. Of the original 2.8 billion short tons, 326 million short tons have been removed by mining or lost in the mining process, leaving 2.5 billion short tons of total remaining coal resources.
