ABSTRACT: This report presents quality and gas content of coals from boreholes SDH-383 and SDH-384 in Posey County, Indiana. Moisture content of the coals ranges from 4.96 percent to 11.29 percent in SDH-383 and from 4.17 percent to 13.67 percent in SDH-384. Sulfur content is generally high, ranging from 1.82 percent in the Survant to 8.39 percent in the Holland coal in SDH-383 and above 3 percent in SDH-384. Ash content ranges from 8.28 percent in the Buffaloville Coal to 22.76 percent in the Colchester in SDH-383 and from 7.31 percent to 17.64 percent in SDH-384. Vitrinite reflectance in SDH-383 ranges from 0.49 to 0.66 percent, classifying the coals as high volatile bituminous C and B rank. The gas content of the coals in boreholes SDH-383 and SDH-384 seems to result from the combination of two factors: coal rank and associated clastic lithologies. Coal rank seems to influence gas content in the upper part of the section (the Carbondale Group). In the lower part of the section (Raccoon Creek Group), gas depletion owing to migration into surrounding sandstones may be the main factor influencing the total gas content.

Notes: Publications in the Indiana Geological Survey Open-File series have been inconsistently named using a variety of series titles including "Open-File Report," "Open-File Map," and "Open-File Study." Prior to 1994, a publication in this series was generally referred to as an "Open-File Report" (but not always). To help reduce confusion created by these inconsistencies, the IGS now refers to every publication in the Open-File series as an "Open-File Study." To be entirely correct in writing a bibliographic reference for a publication, one should use the series name and number that appears on the publication itself.
