As Indiana’s primary geoscience repository, a central part of the mission of the Indiana Geological and Water Survey (IGWS) is to collect, archive, and provide access to geological samples. Ever-evolving societal needs and technological advances guarantee the utility of Indiana cores in perpetuity. The IGWS preserves more than 1,000 bedrock cores that total over 150,000 linear feet of cored rock, representing more than 250,000 feet of drilling. Indiana’s energy, mineral, and water resources are documented in these archived samples of the state’s subsurface. The expense of recovering geologic samples at depths of hundreds to thousands of feet below the surface means that many of the samples in this collection are unique and valuable. Given modern drilling costs, the replacement value of this collection is in the millions of dollars. This map features important reference information about each core in the IGWS bedrock core archive. These data include the spatial location, IGWS reference number, total depth below the land surface captured by the core, top bedrock unit penetrated and depth to the top of that unit, and bottom bedrock unit penetrated and depth to the bottom of that unit. Most cores in this collection preserve a continuous stratigraphic succession between the bottom and top formations.
