On 12-29-11, a revised version of the digital data compilation was published after updating the georeferencing with additional control points and a minimized RMS error. This raster was derived and modified from a pre-existing published paper map of the Regional Geologic Map (RGM) series of the Indiana Geological Survey: Schneider, A.F., and Keller, S.J., 1970, Geologic Map of the 1° x 2° Chicago Quadrangle, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan, Showing Bedrock and Unconsolidated Deposits, Indiana Geological Survey Regional Geologic Map No. 4, Chicago Sheet, Part A (RGM4A). Description: Abstract: BEDROCK_REGIONAL_GEOLOGIC_MAP4_IGS_IN.TIF is a georeferenced TIFF image that shows bedrock geology of the 1° x 2° Chicago quadrangle in the states of Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan, at a scale of 1:250,000. The mapped stratigraphic units include systems and selected groups, formations, and other stratigraphic units, contacts, quarried lands, and made and modified lands. Purpose: BEDROCK_REGIONAL_GEOLOGIC_MAP4_IGS_IN.TIF was created to provide a digital coverage of the bedrock geology of the 1° x 2° Chicago quadrangle in Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan, suitable for use in ArcGIS, from a preexisting published paper map [Schneider, A.F., and Keller, S.J., 1970, Geologic Map of the 1° x 2° Chicago Quadrangle, Indiana, Illinois, and Michigan, Showing Bedrock and Unconsolidated Deposits, Indiana Geological Survey Regional Geologic Map No. 4, Chicago Sheet, Part A (RGM4A)]. The mapped stratigraphic units include systems and selected groups, formations, and other stratigraphic units. This particular version of the map was produced by the Indiana Geological Survey as part of an effort to populate the National Geothermal Data System (NGDS) with data in a digital form. This material is based upon work supported by the Department of Energy and the Arizona Geological Survey under Prime Award Number DE-EE0002850 and Sub-Award Number IN-EE002850. The polygon shapefiles named "QUADRANGLES_24K_USGS_IN.SHP" and "LANDSURVEY_SECTIONS_POLY_IN.SHP" were used as georeferencing base layers. A total of 15 control points were used and an RMS error value of 41.18 meters was obtained. Purcell." Process_Step: Process_Description: The original paper map was scanned using a wide-bed color scanner at 300 dpi. This image was saved to an Adobe Acrobat formatted file named "RGM4A.PDF" for archival purposes by IGS personnel Dave Held. RGM4A.PDF was loaded into Adobe Photoshop 6.0 where it was resampled to 200 dpi and was saved as a TIFF formatted image file named "RGM4A.TIF." RGM4A.TIF was loaded into ESRI ArcGIS ArcMap 8.3 and was georeferenced using the "Georeferencing" toolbar. The tics were obtained using the polygon shapefile LANDSURVEY_STATE_POLY_IN. Once four tics were obtained, the final image was rectified and saved as BEDROCK_GEOL_RGM4.TIF. The "Georeferencing Tool" in ESRI ArcMap (10.0) was then used in combination with two base-layer shapefiles named "QUADRANGLES_24K_USGS_IN.SHP" and "LANDSURVEY_SECTIONS_POLY_IN.SHP" and a total of 15 control points were gathered. A 3rd Order Polynomial Transformation was then used to georeference the TIFF image to the Universal Transverse Mercator, Zone 16, NAD83 coordinate system, and an RMS error value of 41.18 meters was obtained. The file was then renamed as "BEDROCK_REGIONAL_GEOLOGIC_MAP4_IGS_IN.TIF" to conform to internal naming conventions of the Indiana Geological Survey.
